"Now may the God of peace... equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to Him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen"
Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV
This scripture reminds me of a time when placing the "good" alongside the word work was challenging. I had never been on this side of the fence before, but I had a supervisor I could not please. I had always been a good employee and never needed discipline, so I was at a loss about handling this curve I did not see coming. I decided to tackle it in the most respectful way I could imagine. I confronted my authority. I asked for clarification on what needed improvement in my performance. Sadly, no answers were given. Instead, I received retaliation for questioning and was reassigned to random duties. Most of these things had nothing to do with my skill set. My first inclination was to walk away and make this authority happy, but I decided against that as it would be the easy way out. I don't like to quit, so instead, I purposed to be the best at every task I was assigned, no matter how great or small, convenient or inconvenient. That year, God did a work in my heart about serving others I did not know I needed. He changed my perspective and gave me joy and victory in this unwelcomed journey.
Looking back on this experience, I've realized that what seemed like a hurtful situation was actually a blessing in disguise. It was a lesson in resilience and faith, and an understanding that serving Christ doesn't always include choosing how we serve. Sometimes, the path where God can use us most is not the most comfortable or preferred. The scripture doesn't promise that every work will be pleasant, but it assures us that God equips us for every work he calls us to do.
Given a choice, I'll always choose the opportunity to receive His equipping. I have learned that this is always the good work.
Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV
